Who Are You Becoming?

Dallas Willard was one of the greatest philosophers, theologians, and spiritual giants of the 20th century.  He said time and time again, “The most important thing in your life is not what you do. It is who you become.”

Pause. Let that sink in!

The most important thing in your life is not what you do. It is who you become.
Consider that, honestly, for a moment.  Do you believe that?

Rather than “what’s next?” or “how do we make this better, bigger, stronger, faster?” what if we asked a different question? Who are you becoming?

How much energy, thought, and consideration is fueling your own “becoming” today? It’s more important than your to-do, your job, your family, your education, your finances, your travel plans, or anything else happening around the world.

It will do our hearts good to pay attention to those who’ve walked the ancient path before us. As Dallas suggests, “We are becoming, who we will be—forever.”

There are two books from Dallas Willard that you absolutely need to read. They should be on your reading bucket list as a disciple of Jesus. In my mind, Willard’s most influential book is the Divine Conspiracy: Rediscovering our Hidden Life in God. The major emphasis is how we orient our life around our life with God. It is a masterpiece in the art of spiritual formation. Let me warn you: it is not a quick or easy read. I think it took me almost a year to finish it. I read in small doses, and I would read some parts over again before I could fully grasp some of the concepts. However, it is definitely worth it.

I will lift up the other book in the next blog post. (What a teaser . . .)

If our life as a disciple is our most important journey, what steps are you taking to advance your journey as you become who you will be forever?

Have you found a small group yet? Being a disciple is not a solo adventure. You need a small group to do discipleship well.

In His Grip,
Mike Toluba
